Canadian tipping in 2026
The de-facto standard for sit-down restaurants in Canada is 15–20% of the pre-tax bill — with 18% being the most common starting point. Coffee shops with table service are tipped at 10–15%; counters, fast-casual, and self-serve venues are 0% by social convention. Hairdressers, taxi drivers, food delivery, and home-service trades like movers are typically 10–20%.
Why pre-tax?
Tipping a percentage of the post-tax bill means part of your tip is calculated on GST/HST/PST — money that goes to the government, not the server. The Canadian convention is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal. US conventions vary by state because state tax rates are lower and many people don’t bother distinguishing.
What about tip-in service charges?
Some Canadian restaurants now add a 15–20% “service charge” automatically — typically for parties of six or more, or as a permanent policy as part of moving away from tipping. When this happens, no additional tip is expected. The bill should clearly state whether gratuity is included.
