Niacinamide Serum: What It Does, How to Use It & the Best Picks in Canada
Niacinamide is one of the most well-evidenced skincare actives sold in Canada. Here is what it does, the right concentration and pairing, and the best Canadian brands at every budget.

Niacinamide (vitamin B3, nicotinamide) is the rare skincare ingredient with a deep clinical-trial bench behind it. It’s in nearly every dermatologist-recommended routine for oily skin, redness, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and visible pores, and it pairs reliably with almost any other active. The catch: not every product labelled “niacinamide” works the same.
What niacinamide actually does
Strengthens the skin barrier: niacinamide upregulates ceramide production, which reduces trans-epidermal water loss. A 2005 RCT (Tanno et al.) found 12 weeks of 2% topical niacinamide reduced TEWL by ~24% in adults with dry skin.
Reduces post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: a 2011 split-face RCT (Hakozaki) found 4% niacinamide reduced facial hyperpigmentation comparably to 4% hydroquinone after 8 weeks — without hydroquinone’s irritation profile.
Reduces sebum / shine and visible pores: a 2006 RCT in Asian adults found 2% niacinamide reduced sebum excretion rate after 4 weeks. The pore-size effect is partly the result of less sebum production and partly skin-tone evening out around the pore.
What niacinamide does not do: replace sunscreen, treat severe cystic acne (it’s adjunctive), or significantly reduce wrinkles in the short term. The wrinkle-reduction claim is real but small over many months.
The right concentration — and why more isn’t better
5% niacinamide is the sweet spot for most skin types. Concentrations of 2–5% have the strongest published efficacy data with minimal irritation.
10% niacinamide (e.g. The Ordinary 10% Niacinamide + 1% Zinc) works for many people but causes flushing, peeling, or breakouts in roughly 1 in 5 users. There is no published efficacy advantage over 5% for the standard indications.
Above 10%: not recommended for at-home use. The risk-of-irritation curve climbs steeply with no additional benefit.
How to layer it with other actives
Vitamin C: the old wisdom said don’t mix — modern formulations show this is a non-issue. Apply vitamin C in the morning and niacinamide at night, or layer them with a 1-minute pause between if you must use both AM.
Retinol/retinoids: yes, pair them. Niacinamide actually buffers retinoid irritation and accelerates barrier recovery. Apply niacinamide first, then retinol.
Acids (AHA/BHA): use on different days or different times of day to avoid stacking too many actives at once.
Sunscreen: always required. Niacinamide does not replace SPF.
Best niacinamide serums in Canada at every budget
Budget ($10–15): The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% — the original mass-market option, available everywhere. Some users find the 10% irritating; if you do, switch.
Mid-range ($25–40): Paula’s Choice 10% Niacinamide Booster, Naturium Niacinamide Serum 12%, CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum (4% niacinamide blended with low-dose retinol).
Premium ($60–100): SkinCeuticals Metacell Renewal B3 (5% niacinamide), Drunk Elephant B-Hydra Serum, La Roche-Posay Mela B3 Serum.
Best Canadian-made: Three Ships Beauty Brighter Days Niacinamide Serum (Toronto-based, MADE SAFE certified).
Realistic timeline
Sebum and shine: 2–4 weeks.
Redness reduction: 4–8 weeks.
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: 8–12 weeks.
Pore appearance and texture: 12+ weeks.
Don’t judge a niacinamide serum in the first month — the cellular changes take time to show up in the mirror.
The bottom line
Niacinamide is the most reliable single-active skincare investment for most Canadian routines. Start at 5%, layer it under your moisturiser AM or PM, and give it 12 weeks before judging. The Ordinary works for budget; SkinCeuticals or Paula’s Choice if you want a premium formulation.
